De flesta som blir veterinärer blir det för att de älskar djur och vill kunna hjälpa dem, det är även en mycket bra grundsten när man går in i utbildningen. Det har länge varit en väldigt låg arbetslöshet i veterinärprogrammet vilket gör att du sannolikt kan få jobb direkt efter utbildning. Om du vill vara helt säker på att du kommer att få jobb efter din utbildning så bör du specialutbilda dig, än idag så råder det nämligen brist på veterinärer som har specialkompetens och det är därför ett mycket säkert kort för den som vill få jobb. Inkomsten för en färdigutbildad veterinär varierar beroende på vilket arbetsområde som man har valt. Det är vanligt att en veterinär efter cirka 20 år i yrket tjänar ungefär 45 000 kronor i månaden.
När man specialutbildar sig som veterinär så tar det ofta fem år, då arbetar man som veterinär under tiden och skaffar sig nödvändig erfarenhet under tiden. Därför tar ofta specialistutbildningen längre tid då den innebär att man sällan studerar på heltid. Det går att färdigställa specialistutbildningen på heltid men det krävs att man har en viss erfarenhet att arbeta inom veterinäryrket för att man ska få påbörja utbildningen. Därför väljer många att arbeta under tiden att de studerar till specialist inom vilket område de än har tänkt sig när det kommer till utbildningen.
